In Memoriam: Judah Folkman, MD (1933-2008)

BCRF mourns the sudden passing of Judah Folkman, MD. One of our most highly esteemed and long-standing grantees, Dr. Folkman died on Monday, January 14, at the age of 74. A renowned Harvard researcher, his early research led to the theory of therapeutic anti-angiogenesis, which paved the way for a new class of drugs used in cancer and macular degeneration treatments. Science Update - "Starve a Cancer, Feed a Cure"

Angiogenesis: the very word is daunting. But break it down and it becomes a fundamental concept for understanding how tumors grow so well-stronger and faster even than the body's normal cells. Symposium & Luncheon

On a warm autumn day in New York City, 1,100 supporters of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation convened at the Waldorf-Astoria for BCRF's Annual Symposium and Awards Luncheon. The October 16th morning affair, which raised nearly $1.9 million, began with an eye-opening symposium moderated by Dr. Larry Norton on the topic of anti-angiogenesis — a form of targeted therapy that stops tumors from making new blood vessels, thereby inhibiting tumor growth. The Foundation currently supports 173 scientists at top universities and academic medical centers worldwide conducting the most advanced and promising breast cancer research that will lead to prevention and a cure in our lifetime.

BCRF is dedicated to the highest level of fiscal efficiency and believes in full transparency about the distribution of its funds. A minimum of 85 cents of each dollar donated to the Foundation goes directly to breast cancer research and awareness programs.
