Find A Cure Stable

On Saturday, June 8th, Sheryl and Barry Schwartz's horse, Iron Goddess raced into the Winner's Circle in the 12th race at Belmont Raceway! Sandy Goldfarb and Michael Dubb's filly, Cori's Star was also a winner, coming in 4th in the same race, carrying the BCRF Pink Silks!

Both horses were leased to Find A Cure Stable and the owners donated 10% of winnings to BCRF.

Another horse, Digger would have run in the BCRF silks for Find A Cure Stable in the Belmont Stakes, but was withdrawn. Digger's owner, Lawrence Roman, said he would donate what he would have paid in entry fees for Digger to BCRF and other charities.

On Saturday, March 10, 2007, this remarkable young race horse rallied in the turn and came in first in the sixth race at Aqueduct Raceway in the BCRF pink silks! In only the second start of his career, the 4-year-old, New York-bred son of Rodeo brought jockey Eibar Coa home in 1:11.27 for the six furlongs on the fast inner dirt track. It was only the second step in what appears to be a promising career for Call Me Larry, whose owner, Suzie O'Cain's Find A Cure Stable, will donate 10 percent of his earnings to BCRF.

"He is still playing around a little bit, but he's got nowhere to go but up," said trainer Leah Gyarmati. "This is such a great cause. Day in and day out, training can get a little tedious. You're doing it to make a living, but it's fun when you're doing something like this for a good cause. This is a great way to promote racing."

BACK STORY:
When BCRF began the annual Saratoga Luncheon event in 2003, local residents Suzie and Doc O'Cain helped to publicize the event on Suzie's morning TV show, "AM Saratoga".

Suzie and her husband Doc, a veterinarian, also helped to arrange special tours of Saratoga Raceway and the backstretch for Evelyn Lauder, Libby Pataki, and Dr. Larry Norton (BCRF Scientific Director and Chairman of BCRF's Medical Advisory Board.

During the tours and at the Luncheon, Suzie felt obliged not to use Dr. Norton's first name when addressing him. However, he kept urging her to "Call me Larry!" And thus an amazing idea was born. Suzie had a 2-year-old colt in training in Florida and decided to name him Call Me Larry, in honor of Dr. Norton and to raise funds for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Suzie and Doc were granted approval by the Jockey Club for a new stable name, Find A Cure Stable, and to use the BCRF pink ribbon on the silks for Call Me Larry. Following a hiatus in his training due to an injury, Call Me Larry is back in top shape and with a heart as strong as ever....to run for all of our lives.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is proud to be the beneficiary of support through Call Me Larry and Find A Cure Stables. Suzie and Doc O'Cain hope that Call Me Larry will be the first in a long line of horses to carry the BCRF silks and help find a cure for breast cancer.
