About the game
Bunco is a progressive dice game of chance, and is named for when a player rolls three 1's, which count for 21. The first pair of players to get 21 wins. The game is typically played by a group of 12, each of whom contributes to a pot that is awarded to the winners of the game. Most groups play once a month. The game's popularity has surged in recent years, extending from Wisconsin to Ohio to Arizona. There are an estimated 25,000 bunco groups in the US alone.
How Bunco For Breast Cancer Got Started
The idea for Bunco for Breast Cancer was started by Kerry Comstock when her friend, Mary Green, was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 1999. Their Clarendon Hills, IL, bunco group decided to donate the February 2002 pot to the fight against breast cancer. A few more bunco groups joined the cause and the event raised over $30,000. The Chicago Tribune ran a 2-page spread on this grassroots effort.
These ladies - the founders of Bunco For Breast Cancer - in that same year of 2002, designated The Breast Cancer Research Foundation as the sole beneficiary of all events raising funds under the Bunco For Breast Cancer name, and today, BFBC groups are continuing to raise funds for BCRF all year round!
Think of Bunco for Breast Cancer as a girl's night out with a mission! Bunco for Breast Cancer is a chance to have fun with friends, roll some dice and raise money to help find a cure!
