This year, On September 29th, the days began with breast cancer survivor and Grammy® Award winning recording artist Melissa Etheridge kicking off Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the launch of Hard Rock's PINKTOBER breast cancer awareness program with an exclusive performance at Hard Rock Café New York.
Delta, with the help of the Port Authoriity, then launched their 2009 global Breast Cancer Awareness campaign by lighting the exterior of the New York JFK air traffic control tower pink. Immediately following the lighting ceremony, Delta hosted a charter flight for breast cancer survivors aboard its signature "pink plane," from JFK to Washington D.C. While in flight, Etheridge performed a special acoustic rendition of her hit single "I Run for Life."
The following day, Melissa participated in a breast cancer awareness symposium at Hard Rock Cafe Washington, D.C. The theme of the Symposium was "Breast Cancer and Creativity," where the role of creativity in curing and dealing with the disease was discussed. Joining Melissa, the panelists were a mix of BCRF-funded researchers and survivors, including Dr. Larry Norton, Dr. Funmi Olopade, Drs. Susan Domchek and Robert Vonderheide; and Marisa Acocella Marchetto, survivor, cartoonist, and author of "Cancer Vixen."
