Report from the 2012 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, June 1-5
Gathering over 31,400 cancer professionals from around the world, the 2012 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) opened with a moving tribute to Evelyn H. Lauder, founder of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). "Let us remember Evelyn, her vision, her verve, and her vibrancy," said Martin J. Murphy, Jr., PhD, Chairman of ASCO's Conquer Cancer Foundation. "Let us also pledge to redouble our commitment in her memory—a commitment to help create a future free of the fear of cancer." Inherent in that commitment is the promise to constantly advance patient care, the purpose behind ASCO's Annual Meetings. As in previous years, this conference serves as a gateway for community practitioners to learn about the latest advances in cancer treatment and prevention, which could potentially be applied in their own clinical practices. BCRF grantees contributed 292 of the 2,487 accepted oral and poster presentations, which included studies on ovarian, skin, lung, and gastrointestinal cancers in addition to breast cancer. Among the highlights of BCRF-funded investigators who were prominent in meeting presentations included studies targeting cancer metastasis (the spread of cancer), improving clinical care, developing interventions to address post-cancer treatment issues, and focusing on cancer prevention strategies. "What we are doing today could not possibly have been done ten or even five years ago. First and foremost is our ability to sequence the human genome, which identifies mutational events that occur in genes (including cancer genes) in every patient. Decoding the genetic mutations of patients allows us to predict who is likely to benefit or not on standard of care. This is an example of personalized cancer in a very accurate and detailed way."
