Peter Greenwald, MD, Dr. PH, Member

Peter Greenwald is the Director of the Division of Cancer Prevention at the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Maryland. Under his direction, research on cancer prevention, with emphasis on clinical prevention trials, diet and cancer, chemoprevention, early detection, and preventive oncology training, are combined in pursuit of a significant reduction in cancer incidence, morbidity and mortality.
Dr. Greenwald graduated from Colgate University and received his medical degree from the State University of New York at Syracuse. He earned both a Master of Public Health and a Doctor of Public Health degree in cancer epidemiology from Harvard University. He is board certified in both internal and preventive medicine.

For the four years prior to assuming his position with NCI in 1981, he directed the Division of Epidemiology of the New York State Department of Health. Previous positions included Research Professor of Oncology, Albany Medical College; Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; and Associate Scientist, Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research. He directed the Cancer Control Bureau for the New York State Department of Health and was a member of the Governor's Breast Cancer Task force.

Dr. Greenwald holds memberships in the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Epidemiological Society, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Society of Preventive Oncology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Preventive Medicine and the American College of Epidemiology, of which he is a past member of the Board of Directors. Dr. Greenwald was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute from 1981 to 1987.

His research work relates primarily to human cancer prevention trials, nutrition and cancer, cancer epidemiology and cancer control. In 1997, he received the Outstanding Research Award of the American Institute for Cancer Research, the Public Health Service Award of the Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation, and the Distinguished Service Award of the American Cancer Society. Dr. Greenwald has contributed over 200 papers to the cancer research literature.
