Eduardo Cazap, MD

President, Latin American and Caribbean Society of Medical Oncology (SLACOM)
Buenos Aires, Argentina
Dr. Cazap has been elected to a Non-U.S. Oncology seat on the board of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) for three years. He will take office at ASCO's 45th Annual Meeting in Orlando in June 2009.
2008-2009 BCRF Project:
This new project from SLACOM researchers is a continuation of three years of work. The compilation of the data allowed them to learn about breast cancer in the region in a systematic manner, allowing the development and implementation of recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, which will promote a remarkable improvement in breast cancer care in Latin American developing countries.

The main conclusions from the network of experts are that prevention and research are the critical needs in Latin America to be faced in our next programs. Based on these conclusions, a new research project is proposed to systematically review the data from Latin-American patients with diagnosis of invasive breast cancer from the databases of the main cancer centers of several countries of the region. This will provide the researchers with knowledge of diagnostic characteristics, prognostic factors, patterns of recurrence and survival of the disease. Dr. Cazap and the entire group of researchers are confident that this effort will continue to improve breast cancer care in their countries, most of them of low and middle income. Dr. Cazap and the entire group of researchers working together (including leaders in the field from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay) are confident that this effort will continue to improve breast cancer care in their countries, most of them of low and middle income.

Mid-year Progress Report:
The main conclusions from the network of experts are that prevention and research are critical needs in Latin America to be faced in our next programs. Based on these conclusions, a new research project has been initiated, reviewing the data from 2,000 Latin-American patients with diagnosis of invasive breast cancer from the databases of the main cancer centers from Argentina, Brazil and Peru, followed for more than 20 years. This will lead to knowledge about diagnostic characteristics, prognostic factors, and patterns of recurrence and survival of the disease in women suffering from breast cancer in the region, data that until today have not been studied. Dr. Cazap and his colleagues are confident that this effort will continue the improvement of breast cancer care in Latin American countries, most of them representing low and middle income patients.
