Q&A with Myra Biblowit
President, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation®
What does The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® do?
BCRF's focus continues to be, as it always has been, to fund the most promising breast cancer research in the world so that one day we can live in a world without breast cancer. For 20 years, our Foundation has helped save lives and has significantly improved the quality of care and survivorship for tens of thousands of breast cancer patients through innovative medical research worldwide. If not for BCRF, many of the critical and ground-breaking achievements in breast cancer would not be realized today.
Where does the money go?
91 cents of every dollar spent by The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is directed towards breast cancer research and awareness. Currently, the Foundation is supporting more than 195 dedicated researchers at major medical institutions across the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and China.
The research we fund, which addresses all aspects of the disease, falls into two main categories: "Finding the Cause" and "Finding the Cure".
Researchers working on "Finding the Cause" investigate the factors believed to contribute to the formation of breast cancer at a cellular level. Specifically, the research is focused into three areas: 1) inherited susceptibility to breast cancer (i.e. the role of genetics), 2) external effects (i.e. the impact of environment and human behavior), and 3) when good cells go bad (i.e. irregular cellular activities that cause cancer).
Researchers working on "Finding the Cure" investigate ways to prevent, treat and, ultimately, cure breast cancer. Specifically, the research is focused into five main areas: 1) clinical innovations (i.e. maximizing treatment therapies), 2) staying healthy (i.e. risk identification, mitigation, management, survival), 3) clinical trials (i.e. patient studies on new and existing treatments), 4) paths towards personalized medicine (i.e. the knowledge needed to target, personalize, or individualize treatment), and 5) metastases (i.e. why and how tumors spread and the causes of therapy resistance).
Why should a consumer purchase a product that supports The Breast Cancer Research Foundation®?
As breast cancer continues to be front and center in the media limelight, it is important for consumers to know that, unlike other breast cancer organizations that focus on awareness or advocacy, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation focuses solely on research. We believe in empowering consumers with information and work hard to ensure they are well-informed about the donation amount to the charity. That is why we require every official corporate partner to clearly state their donation so that consumers know the donation per product or program at the point of purchase. BCRF complies with all 20 Standards of Charitable Accountability prescribed by The Better Business Bureau® including the Standard for how charities benefit from cause-marketing programs.
To ensure that the lion's share of our funding goes directly to research, BCRF keeps administrative costs as low as possible. In fiscal 2012, overhead was only 9% of revenues. As a result, the Foundation has received the highest ratings from monitoring agencies: 4 stars from Charity Navigator, and BCRF is the only breast cancer organization rated an "A+" by CharityWatch, formerly known as The American Institute of Philanthropy.
