Evelyn Lauder leads a fund drive over the course of 3 years (1989--1992) to raise more than $18 million for the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. The center was completed and opened in 1992 and equipped as the first breast cancer diagnostic and treatment center under one roof--a model throughout the world. Expert care is made available in a comfortable and private out-of-hospital setting.
Evelyn Lauder guest-edits a special edition of SELF magazine and collaborates with Alexandra Penney to promote the use of the Pink Ribbon as the universal symbol for breast cancer.
Evelyn Lauder spearheads the distribution of hundreds of thousands of pink ribbons and breast cancer self-exam instruction cards during October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (inaugurated in the U.S. in 1985 with the help of Mrs. Betty Ford.)
