our history

Read about the important initiatives by Evelyn Lauder in 1992 that set the stage for the establishment of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation...

  • Evelyn Lauder leads a fund drive over the course of 3 years (1989--1992) to raise more than $18 million for the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. The center was completed and opened in 1992 and equipped as the first breast cancer diagnostic and treatment center under one roof--a model throughout the world. Expert care is made available in a comfortable and private out-of-hospital setting.

  • Evelyn Lauder guest-edits a special edition of SELF magazine and collaborates with Alexandra Penney to promote the use of the Pink Ribbon as the universal symbol for breast cancer.

  • Evelyn Lauder spearheads the distribution of hundreds of thousands of pink ribbons and breast cancer self-exam instruction cards during October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (inaugurated in the U.S. in 1985 with the help of Mrs. Betty Ford.)
